22 kW Home EV Charging: What You Need to Know

Charging at home makes EV ownership more convenient. Connect your vehicle while it is parked and replenish the energy you need for your next journey.

Infinity EV supplies 22 kW home AC chargers, supported by compatibility guidance and installation expertise. Understanding how this charging capacity works will help you know what to expect from your home charging setup.

What Does 22 kW Mean?

Kilowatts (kW) measure charging power. A 22 kW charger can supply up to 22 kilowatts of electrical power when the vehicle and installation support that output.

The rating describes the charger’s maximum capacity. Your actual charging speed depends on your vehicle’s onboard AC charger, your home’s electrical supply and the capacity configured during installation.

Will My Car Charge at 22 kW?

Your vehicle determines how much AC charging power it can accept.

For example, a compatible vehicle with an 11 kW AC charging limit can charge at up to 11 kW when connected to a 22 kW charger, subject to the installation’s available capacity. A vehicle that supports 22 kW AC charging can use the charger’s full output when the electrical supply also supports it.

A lower AC charging limit does not automatically rule out using a 22 kW charger. The specific vehicle, connector and charger must be checked for compatibility.

When reviewing your vehicle’s specifications, look for its maximum AC charging rate. Its DC fast-charging rating applies to a different charging method.

What Does Your Home Need?

Delivering the full 22 kW requires a suitable three-phase electricity supply with sufficient available capacity.

Before installation, a professional site assessment should check:

Your electricity supply and available capacity.

The distribution board, wiring, earthing and required protection.

Your parking position and the cable route.

The proposed charger location and distance from your vehicle.

This assessment establishes the charging power your property can support and identifies any electrical work required.

How Long Will Charging Take?

Charging time depends on how much energy you need to add and the power your vehicle actually receives. Battery conditions, charging losses and vehicle settings can also affect the result.

For everyday driving, you will often be topping up the energy used during the day. Your daily mileage and the time your car remains parked at home are therefore useful starting points when planning your installation.
